The Nikon Coolpix S6, petite enough to fit in your pocket without attracting on-lookers, isn’t just a stylish fashion statement; it’s one of the best ultra-portable digital cameras around. It’s easy to carry, easy on the eyes, and easy to use. Of all the ultra-compact digital cameras out there, the Nikon Coolpix S6 stands out in terms of performance, battery life, style, features, quality, and value. You won’t be let down.
You can create spectacular in-camera slide shows with music effortlessly and swiftly. This camera lets users select a number of pictures or movies, select a music file, choose a “style” (a combination of slide transitions and speed), and then Nikon works its magic. Out comes the slideshow, a pleasurable way to share pictures you’ve just taken with others. The whole process doesn’t take more than a few minutes, depending on how many pictures you’ve chosen. You can view the slideshows on your computer as well through the Nikon-provided software. But seeing them on the huge 3″ LCD screen isn’t awful.
The rechargeable battery lasts long enough for an entire day of casual shooting. By the way, the just-mentioned slide show capability is a big no-no if you’re running low on battery. It’s a huge drain on the rechargeable batteries, and you should use those advanced features with the camera fully charged or plugged in. Otherwise, the battery is quite proficient.
It’s got enough modes beyond the traditional (automatic, portrait, landscape, night, sports etc.) to battle any other ultra-compact digital camera on the market. In fact, if you’re taking a picture of another person’s face, switch to “Face Priority” and the camera will actually be able to focus accordingly. It’s amazing that S6 can actually “sense” a person’s face. It’s also very easy to switch between modes, and in most cases, doesn’t require more than three steps.
The vibration warning it gives is awesome, which helps avoid those annoying blurry pictures. This camera will actually warn you that you are shaking the camera and that the resulting picture may be blurred. There’s also an in-camera lighting feature (called D-Lighting) that allows you to take a picture that didn’t quite turn out the way you wanted (in terms of lighting) and brighten it within the camera. It’s a good feature to have, although it’s not necessary if you own basic photo editing software. Overall, the pictures are crisp, clear, bight, colorful, lively, and full of detail. Especially pictures taken with the Best Shot Selector, which takes a bunch of pictures very quickly and automatically saves the best (sharpest) one. It’s a winner in the quality department.
