A real page turner…

It is going to be hard to review this book without revealing the plot, but it’s worth a try. As it is completely plot driven with minimal characterization, it is a difficult duty.
The first 75% of the book is quite compelling as it covers numerous murders, an effort to blow up the Vatican, and some interesting sounding characters including the pope, the art historian, the priest, his adopted daughter, and the head of the science lab in the wheel chair. To top it all off, there’s also an election for the new pope as the existing one just died.
The plot is more than page turning in the very beginning, as well as the rest of the book. However, when you read about a priest and an adopted daughter at the start of the book, one has to shelve their belief in the normal as well as expect some peculiar plot twists.
The final quarter of the book literally falls apart as it has some outrageous plot twists that totally do not make sense. That is, unless you’re in a Stephen King novel.
This book absolutely reads like a movie…surprised it hasn’t been released yet…I can just picture the casting of the film….the male lead in the book is not “handsome” but he is still good looking with a swimmer’s body. Vietra, the heroine isn’t beautiful but is nonetheless striking to look at with an incredible body. For once, I’d love to see a book with a middle aged guy with a gut and the heroine who has troubles with acne or swollen ankles for that matter.
The plot covers some form of terrorist group who desires to blow up the Vatican because they used to be anti-science. Practically every institution has made mistakes in its time. By dealing with rebellious groups, we are only feeding into anti-catholic or anti-anything beliefs. There are plot twists as there is a countdown of only six hours until the Vatican will blow up. Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys?
Yes, this book is engaging…honestly a book you will enjoy. However, when there are countless other books that are more substantial when considering elements like plot, literary content, and characterization, it’s like eating a Big Mac….tasty, not rewarding, and not good for you.
There seems to be some well researched portions in the book that deal with religion. It comes across with some accuracy. However, for the naïve person, this can be risky as the reader will believe these factual errors to be truth and will base his beliefs on them.
The concluding section of the book is totally absurd….it really forces the reader to postpone his belief in reality. Sure, the reader can postpone belief here and there but to have to postpone common sense for people falling out of helicopters, injuries, lies, fires, etc. is going overboard. Then all of a sudden it deals with mental illness, delusions of greatness, and trying to recompense for what has gone wrong. It really is too much and leaves an awful taste in the reader’s mouth.
