17 Awesomely Bad Action Movies

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Occasionally a movie comes out that is bad on so many levels that you just can’t seem to get enough of it. You know the kind I’m talking about. Terrible acting, over-dramatic dialogue, unneeded and scientifically impossible stunts, scantly clad women, etc, etc, etc. At first, you feel you’ve wasted 90 minutes of your life watching a bunch of explosions loosely tied together around some mundane plot. Then you watch it a second time. And a third time. And then a fourth. And then, before you know it, you’re quoting that horrible movie amongst your friends.

Top 5 Comic Book Movies

X-Men Collection (X-Men/X2 - Widescreen Edition)X-Men 2 – X-Men United: This is an action-packed movie filled with special effects and a compelling story line. The X-Men story is about humans who have mutations that give them super powers. The X-Men, a group of peaceful mutants, protect the world from evil. In the film, a rogue military colonel, William Stryker, wants to destroy all peaceful mutants because of a grudge he has against the X-Men’s leader, Charles Xavier. The X-Men along with Magneto must stop him. This movie opens with action and intensity and it continues throughout the film. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final explosive scene. All Star Cast: Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and Halle Berry.

Batman Begins (Two-Disc Special Edition)Batman Begins:
This is not only the best installment of the Batman films, but one of the top comic book movies of all time. The stage is set before the original Batman movies, when Bruce Wayne was a young adult still depressed about the murder of his parents. The plot unravels further as we learn why Bruce Wayne is becoming Batman. Once Bruce becomes Batman he takes on villains such as Scarecrow and Ra’s Al Ghul. Because this plot runs deeper than prior Batman’s and the special effects are ultra-modern, you don’t need to be a comic book or superhero fan to enjoy this film – just a fan of great stories. All Star Cast: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson and Katie Holmes.

Rudy (Deluxe Edition)1. Rudy (1993)
My love of Notre Dame Football aside, Rudy is one of the greatest sports movies of all time. Who cares if this film, which is “based on a true story,” is mostly fabricated? It’s a great film following the life of Daniel Rudy Ruettiger, as he chases his dream of playing football for Notre Dame. Who can’t relate to that? “Cheer, Cheer for Old Notre Dame!” On a side note, as a Notre Dame fan, I must point out that the movie’s villainous head coach, Dan Devine, was not nearly the jerk the movie made him out to be. The movie needed a villain, and Devine, as a favor to Rudy, allowed his character to become that villain. In fact, it was actually Devine’s idea that Rudy play.

The Boondock Saints (Unrated Special Edition)Boondock Saints: Uncut Special Edition
This one isn’t for the kiddies or the faint of heart. But those who aren’t opposed to gratuitous violence will love this flick. It follows the story of the MacManus Brothers (played by Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus) who find themselves in trouble with the mob after a bar room brawl. Obviously, mobsters don’t like being roughed up, especially by two Irish guys. After a drunken fire-setting melee, the mobsters seek bloody revenge on the two Irish brothers. Connor and Murphy MacManus (could they have given these guys more Irish names?) turn the tables on their mobster attackers and are praised as heroes. Consequently, they decide killing off the wicked of the world isn’t a bad idea. Murderous rampages ensue with Willem Dafoe playing the role of the detective hot on their trail. This movie didn’t see much time, if any, in theaters due to its violent nature, but has been a cult classic. The uncut special edition won’t disappoint.
